Profiles in Filipino Heritage Excellence

Carmen N. Urbayan, DNP, RN, CPN, PCNS-BC
Clinical Nurse Specialist for Pediatrics and PICU

I was born in Manila, Philippines. I was inspired to become a nurse by seeing the great impact and influence that nurses have in the lives of patients and their family, the community they serve, and the health care industry.

To me, Filipino Heritage Month is a celebration and appreciation of what it means to be a Filipino - our culture, tradition, values, and history. My Filipino heritage has shaped me into the person that I am today, building the foundational values that guide my ethical decision-making and nursing professional practice.

One thing I wish others knew is that the Filipino culture emphasizes hospitality, resilience, respect for elders, religious traditions, and their love for family gatherings and holiday potlucks.
